Come have fun with us decorating your own Day of the Dead “sugar” skull, play Loteria and have your face painted!
Sugar Skull Decorating
Sugar skulls represented a departed soul, had the name written on the forehead and was placed on the home ofrenda or gravestone to honor the return of a particular spirit. Sugar skull art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments.
Loteria Game
Lotería is a traditional Mexican board game of chance and is played on a deck of cards. Every image has a name. Each player has one tabla, a board with a randomly grid of pictures with their corresponding name.
To start the game, the caller (cantor, "singer") shuffles the deck. One by one, the caller picks a card from the deck and announces it to the players by its name, sometimes using a verse before reading the card name. Each player locates the matching pictogram of the card just announced on their board and marks it off with a pinto bean on top as a marker (this is the authentic Mexican way!) The winner is the first player that shouts "¡Lotería!" right after completing a tabla.
Catrina Face Painting (3:00 - 4:00 PM)
Toronto based "Catrinas Makeup & Design" founder and artist, Maria José Miranda, will paint catrinas for little ones to celebrate Day of the Dead.
Since 2013 Maria José has had the select privilege of executing Day of the Dead makeup for a number of performers for cultural and corporate events around the city.
